James Haythorpe was born at Coston, Norfolk about 1750. He was the son of John HAYTHORPE baptised at Hingham on 26 April 1724 and Jane HARMAN baptised at Coston on 2 September 1722 (Jane was the daughter of Joseph HARMAN and Elizabeth GARRARD both of Coston who were married at Brandon Parva 29 November 1720. John HAYTHORPE and Jane HARMAN were married at Hardingham on 23 September 1743.) On 30 August 1778 James married Mary WATTS at Hardingham, Norfolk. James and Mary had 10 children: Watts, Jemima, James, Mary, Charles, Elizabeth, Reuben, Susan, Ann and Harriet. Mary was buried at Hardingham on 30 August 1819 and James on 5 February1838.

Watts was baptised at Hardingham on 15 December 1778. He married Ann WOODCOCK at Hingham on 19 October 1798 and they had 7 children: James Nale, Mary, Watts, Anne, William, Reuben and Henry. Watts was buried on 25 May 1847 and Ann on 25 February 1855.
Jemima was baptised at Hardingham on 3 September 1780. She married John NIXON at Hardingham on 25 October 1803 and they had a daughter Ann. John died in 1808 and Jemima then married Henry ROSE at Ramsey, Huntingdonshire on 4 July 1808. The two children I know of are Thomas and Henry. Thomas was born about 1810 and married Hannah BURGESS they bought up their family: Thomas, John Burgess, Elizabeth and William Henry at a farm on Ten Mile Bank near Hilgay, Norfolk. Hannah was buried at Hilgay on 4 July 1868 and then Thomas married Rebecca CRISP in 1871 and they had a daughter Priscilla Rebecca born 1869. Thomas died at Hilgay on 13 November 1871 leaving Rebecca a widow with a baby daughter to bring up. They buried Thomas at Hilgay on 17 November 1871. Rebecca never remarried, she went to live in Downham Market. Priscilla married Edward Joseph REVILL at Downham Market in 1893 and they had 5 children brought up in the Greater London area. Rebecca is listed as a visitor with them in 1911 and dies there in 1914. Thomas and William Henry stay close to the farm and Hilgay and marry and bring up there families there. Elizabeth Hannah was only 21 when she died in 1863 and was buried at Hilgay. John Burgess was living in Littlehampton, Kent when he died in 1887 but his widow Sarah Ramm (nee HILL) brought their children back to Norfolk and her family at Briston. Jemima's son Henry ROSE married Elizabeth STOKES on 6 October 1836 at Manea, Cambridgeshire. Their son Henry William Stokes ROSE was born at Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire but farmed at Rose Farm, Hilgay. He married Matilda Jane HARRISON at Fordham on 19 October 1864 and they had Five children: Lileanor 1866, Ernest H 1868, Frank 1869, Horace 1871 and an unnamed male child who birth was recorded in 1874 according to GRO. This is a bit odd as both Henry William Stokes Rose and Matilda Jane Harrison Rose died in 1873. Henry on 31 July and Matilda on 4 November. Possibly this came about if Matilda was pregnant with the child when Henry died, himself away in Littlehampton when he passed, then died herself in childbirth late November. If a family member went to record the child's birth some weeks later it might have been registered as 1874.
James was baptised at Hardingham on 17 January 1782. He married Abigail DYE on 7 December 1808 at Hardingam. They had 11 children : Zaccharias, James, James, William, Robert, Abigail, Harriet, Mary, Charlotte, John and Watts. Zaccharias married Susannah FRANCIS on 6 January 1854 and they brought their family up at Holbeach Bank, Lincolnshire. James was born on 10 May 1811 and baptised on 3 June 1811 at Hingham, he died in infancy though I have not found a burial recor for him. He certainly died before 1833 as Abigail gave birth that year to twin boys and named one of them James and the other William. William was found guilty of stealing two guns in 1833 and transported to Van Diemans Land an board the vessel "ARAB". He was conditionally pardoned at Hobart on 9 May 1844.Sometime after that he made his way to South Australia and married Mary Ann RYAN at Penwortham, SA on 17 October 1855. William and Mary Ann had at least eight children all born at Leasingham, SA: The family then moved to Mannum, South Australia and farmed land there. William had died at Leasingham in 1889 Mary Ann is buried at Mannum, she died there in 1913.

Charles was baptised at Hardingham on 15th or 25 th August 1786. There are two entries in the register one crossed through so one could be birth date and one baptism. Charles was a cordwainer by trade. He married Elizabeth FROST at Hardingham on the 29 July 1822 and they had four children : Sarah (1825-1826), Charles (1828-1830), Anna Maria (1830-1921) and Charles (1832- 1915). Charles died aged 47 and was buried at Hardingham on 7 March 1833. Elizabeth married Richard JUBY on 13 November 1834 at Hardingham and on the 1841 census they are living at Hardingham Road, Hingham with Elizabeth's children Anna Haythorpe aged 10 and Charles Haythorpe aged 9. Charles has left home by 1851 but Anna is still living with Elizabeth and Richard she is aged 20 unmarried and working as a dressmaker. Anna married George LENT at Long Stratton on 4 November 1859. They had one child George William 1860-1939. Charles jnr married Louisa HOWARD at gayton on 13 October 1856. They went to live at Battersee in London. They had no children.
Elizabeth was baptised at Hardingham on 16 December 1788. Elizabeth may have been the widow Elizabeth WILSON who married Thomas Page Leader at Norwich on 27 July 1842.
Reuben was baptised at Hardingham on 28 August 1794. He married Sarah STONE at Hardingham on 6 January 1814. They had one child Charlotte baptised at Deopham on 16 November 1817. The family lived at Wicklewood but were all buried at Hardingham, Charlotte died first and was buried on 13 April 1865 and her mother the following month on 18 May. Reuben was buried there on 10 November 1876.
Susan sometimes known as Susannah was baptised at Hardingham on 4 January 1796, the surname was spelled as HAIGHTHORPE. Susan had a child Frederick HAYTHORPE baptised at Hardingham on 27 July 1817. On the 29 October 1817 she married John FOX at St Michael-at-Plea, Norwich. Susan and John then made their home at Manea, Cambridgeshire where their son Thomas Haythorpe FOX was baptised on 4 October 1818. John died and was buried on 3 August 1821 at Ramsey, Huntingdonshire. Susan married again on 29 December 1823 to William PERRY at Ramsey. Susan died in 1863 in Huntingdonshire. Her son Thomas never married and died at Ramsey in 1872. Her other son, Frederick was a carpenter and joiner by trade. He married Mary SUDDERICK at Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire in 1842. They had four children: Susan Ann, Martha, Betsey and Frederick. Frederick died at Ramsey on 28 April 1902 and left effects of £162 to his widow Mary.
Ann was baptised at Hardingham on 6 May 1798.
Harriet was born at Hardingham on 10 December 1800 and baptised there on 28 December 1800. Harriet married William EVERETT at Deopham on 20 November 1820 and they had three children: Mary Ann, Watson (Watts) and William. At the Summer Assizes in Norwich in 1824 Harriet's husband William was convicted of larceny and sentenced to 7 weeks imprisonment. In 1826 William, his father Samuel, and 3 other men were charged with burglary from a shop in Deopham. They were all convicted at the Norfolk Assizes, the judge condemning William's father for leading him into a life of crime. William, Samuel and two other men received a death sentence on 23 December 1826. Samuel's death sentence was commuted to transportation for life and he was sent to New South Wales, Australia. William though was not a well man, apparently suffering from consumption so he was sent to Prison in Swaffham and died there in 1828. Harriet was left a widow with three young children but she married John SEMONENCE (SEMMENCE) at Deopham in 1833. John was a widower with young children of his own too. In 1841 Harriet and John, an agricultural labourer, are living at Hawfield, Deopham with John's children John aged 16 and Ellis aged 14 and Harriet's two sons Watts aged 17, working as a carpenter and William aged 15 a taylor. In 1851 Harriet and John are living on their own at 33 Morley St Botolph. In 1861 they are living at Ivy Barn Cottage Church Road, Morley St Botolph and have a visitor Rachel RICHARDSON aged 16. In 1871 their address is just given as Cottage Morley St Botolph and their granddaughter Mary Ann RICHARDSON ageed 15 is living with them. They next next appear on Workhouse admissions on Wednesday 29 August 1877 at Wicklewood. They discharged themselves from the workhouse on 26 March 1878. John is again admitted to Wicklewood Workhouse 15 April 1878. Harriet is readmitted on 27 April 1878. In 1881 they are both in the Forehoe Union Workhouse at Wicklewood. Harriet died in 1884 and John in 1888. Harriet's daughter Mary Ann married John RICHARDSON and it is their daughter Rachel visiting Harriet and John in 1861 and another daughter Mary Ann living with Harriet and John in 1871. Harriet's two sons both seem to have lived entwined lives where marriages, mistresses and children are concerned, nonetheless they do always seem to have included their name of Everett along with other names bestowed on their offspring. Watts probably married Sarah Ann KNOTT in Norwich in 1848. There was one child a daughter named Virginia Clementine baptised 9 October 1849 and buried 25 October 1849. Watts next appears on the 1871 census living at St Benedict, Norwich with Mary FORDER a widow with three children William, Ellen and Catherine all with the middle name of EVERETT. Records also show another child Laura Everett Forder. Watts died in 1878. Harriet's youngest son William Wilson Everett led a life is even more tangled and I haven't fully unravelled the knot! William first marries Harriet Maxey at Norwich in 1948 and they have four children Ellen, Fanny, Fred and Edith and they are living together in Norwich in 1861. On the next census in 1871 William is living with a lady called Annie WARDLEWORTH who is a widow and described as his housekeeper. William's children Fred aged 16 and Edith Kate aged 13 are with them along with Theophilus and Isobel B. E. Wardkeworth aged 11 years and 5 months respectively. William is lodging away from home in 1881 but states on the census that he is married. By 1891 he has moved to Great Yarmouth and is living at 21 St Peters Road with Alice Elizabeth KING entered as his wife. Also on the census is Alice King 18 daughter, William King 15 son along with Cecil Ernest Everett grandson aged 12 and Reginald Wilson grandson aged 9. William next moves to Baynards Green Laxfield, Suffolk and is there in 1901 along with Alice Everett, wife aged 50. William then moves again to Wilby Road Shadbroke , Suffolk and on the 1911 census is with Alice Elizabeth Everett wife aged 60 and it records them as married for 40 years with two children. The tangle seems to continue with the relationships into the next generation and I haven't yet come to the bottom of it all! William died in Suffolk in 1912.

Mary was baptised at Hardingham on 2 March 1784, the daughter of James HAYTHORPE and Mary WATTS. She first married on 13 May 1804 at Hingham, Norfolk Thomas POND. Mary and Thomas had four children Maria 1804-1848, Elizabeth 1806-1823, Mary 1808-1826 and Bridget 1810-1889. Mary was left a young widow with four daughters when Thomas died in 1812 at Hingham. She married again Stephen MUTIMER on 22 November 1813 at Hingham. Stephen is recorded as a bachelor and Mary a widow and the witnesses to the marriage were Mary's brother and his wife, James and Abigail HAYTHORPE. Mary gave birth to six more daughters: twins Matilda and Jemmima in 1814, Harriet 1815, Matilda 1816, Providence 1819, Jessie 1822 and a son Reuben in 1825.
Stephen Mutimer Top of the page
There are records relating to Stephen MUTIMER in Hingam: one in 1815 where he is recorded as a baker, then in 1822 his occupation is given as a labourer. In 1830 though Stephen fell by the wayside and was convicted of stealing 3 coombs of barley from Thomas BRASNETT. The trial took place at Norwich Crown Court on 30 January 1830. On trial with him was a fellow named Matthew WICK aged 29. Matthew was the husband of Mary's daughter Maria POND. Stephen and Matthew were sentenced to 7 years imprisonment but then deported to Australia. There are records of the voyage on the Lady Faversham when Stephen was ill and of their arrival in Sydney. On 23 July 1839 Stephen was granted his certificate of freedom after serving his sentence but there is no record of him returning to his family in the UK. (Nor is there any record of Matthew Wick coming back to Britain and his family but there is records of him marrying in Australia and having another family there.) (see Mutimer Family History)
After Transportation Top of the page
What happened to the family after Stephen and Matthew were deported? Mary died at Sporle, Norolk and is buried there on 28 August 1839. Maria appears on the 1841 census living in London Road, Swaffham with her son Matthew 15 who is working as a tailors apprentice. Matthew had been baptised at Hingham on 11 February 1928 he died a young man at Swaffham and was buried there on 7 March 1852. Meanwhile Maria died in Swaffham on Christmas Day 1848 and was buried the following day. Her first born son, Thomas, baptised at Hingham on 1 April 1826 was living at Feltwell, Norfolk in 1841 and was also working as a tailor's apprentice. He married Frances Louise FROST at King's Lynn, Norfolk on 8 October 1850. Thomas's father Matthew WICK is named on the marriage certificate and it states that he was a carpenter. Thomas and Frances set up home in Ash Close, Swaffham and are living there in 1851, Thomas is now a journeyman tailor Thomas and Frances have two children Maria 1851 and Matthew 1853. Frances dies in 1854, possibly as result of complications with childbirth as she is buried at Swaffham on 17 January that year and Matthew, her baby aweek or so later on 26 January. Thomas is buried at Swaffham on 9 March 1860 and in 1861 9 year old Maria is a scholar at what appears to be a small private school next to The Rectory at Sandringham, Norfolk where the head of the household is Martha LANCASTER unmarried 31 housekeeper. Maria is only a young girl when she dies at Fakenham and is buried there on 24 June 1867 ... and so dies out the family left behind by Matthew Wicks when he was deported to Australia.

Of the other daughters of Thomas POND: Elizabeth dies young and is buried on 2 April 1823 at Hingham aged 17 years. Likewise Elizabeth who is 18 when she is buried at Hingham on 27 September 1826. Henry died and was buried at Sporle on 4 December 1842 and Bridget works as a straw bonnet maker to support her children. Later in life she married Richard ROUT, widower, at Swaffham on 19 October 1877. Witnesses to their marriage were James and Harriet CODMAN (Bridget's step-sister and her husband). Jemima is with them, unmarried and working as a dressmaker. Providence is 15 and living at home as is James 16 and he is an apprentice wheelwright.
