James Gordon CAMPBELL was born Leslie Gordon HOPKINS on 14th March 1907 in Ospringe, near Faversham, Kent. He was the youngest son of William Henry HOPKINS and Alice KEEN.

James Gordon CAMPBELL married Winifred Daisy CREASY in Reigate in December 1933. Winifred was the daughter of George Samuel CREASY and Mary Caroline LUFF and was born on 11th July 1907 in Reigate, Surrey.

James and Winifred had five children Brian, Barry, Raymond, Valerie and Roger.

Leslie changed his name from HOPKINS to CAMPBELL and moved to Reigate, he probably went to live with his sister Eva who was already living there with her husband. He then became known as James Gordon Campbell although he didn't make this official until 1956.
