• Obituary, 1919, Egloshayle, Cornwall. James joined the navy in 1889
His first ship was HMS Pembroke where he was listed as a plumber's mate. he worked the Australia Stations aboard the Mildura and the Curacoa from 1891 til 1895 when he returned to Britain. Here he served on HMS Cambridge, for 2 years, a gunnery ship moored off Plymouth. he returned to the pembroke for a year 1897-98, now doing harbour service off Britain. This was followed with service aboard HMS Brisk, a Torpedo Cruiser and then aboard HMS Centurian from 5th June 1901 until 19 August 1901.
10 April 1901 HMS Centurian was moored in Shanghai when her cables came adrift and she drifted accross the bows of the battleship HMS Glory Hole. A hole was ripped in the bow of the Centurian which was repaired in Hong Kong. She arrived in Portsmouth on the 19th August 1901 which was the day that James left the ship. James must have transferred from the Brisk in Hong Kong possibly to maintain the repair on the journey.
James returned to the Pembroke for his final time before he left the ships on 4 July 1902.
He married Nellie Ada Belcher in 1891. They had 4 children.
in 1911 they were living in Gillingham kent and he is listed as a ship' carpenter- Royal Navy.
