MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT - On Tuesday last, the barque "Clio," EASTHOPE, master, lying at Cove, in Padstow harbour, with upwards of 300 emigrants on board for Quebec, being under sailing orders, some of the passengers came up to the town to buy provisions &c. for their voyage. When about to return, two tradesmen WILLIAM BRABYN and WILLIAM KNIGHT RAWLINGS, took nine of them into a rather small boat, and there being much billow in the river, the boat on her passage to the ship upset, and W. Brabyn and W. Rawlings with five of the passengers were drowned. Brabyn has left a wife and four children, and Rawlings a wife and six children, totally unprovided for. The body of Brabyn alone had been found when our correspondent sent us the above particulars.

• Obituary: 1931, Egloshayle, Cornwall. William was born in 1841, the son of William Brabyn, a saddler, and Maria Brabyn née Brinton. The family lived in Padstow. William's father was drowned on the Doom Bar outside Padstow in 1847, when William was six.
He married Eliza Ann Bate on 5 November 1862 in St Minver .
From 1861 (or earlier), William was a shipwright and and boat builder.
The 1901 census describes his occupation as "Living on own means"[14], but the 1914 Kelly's Directory for Wadebridge still lists William Henry Brabyn as 'boat builder'.
William served for three years on the Padstow lifeboat alongside his brother James, before moving to Egloshayle[21].William and Eliza were Wesleyan Methodists, having several of their children baptised in the Camelford circuit.
The masonic square and compasses symbols on their gravestone show that William was a Freemason (like his sons James and Stephen). He joined Molesworth Lodge, Wadebridge on 7th February 1898, having previously been a member of the Lodge of Fidelity No.230 in Plymouth (Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire). He became Worshipful Master of Molesworth Lodge on 4th February 1907.
William was buried with his wife,sons William and James, and next to his daughter Eliza Ann Goss.

His first ship was HMS Pembroke where he was listed as a plumber's mate. he worked the Australia Stations aboard the Mildura and the Curacoa from 1891 til 1895 when he returned to Britain. Here he served on HMS Cambridge, for 2 years, a gunnery ship moored off Plymouth. he returned to the pembroke for a year 1897-98, now doing harbour service off Britain. This was followed with service aboard HMS Brisk, a Torpedo Cruiser and then aboard HMS Centurian from 5th June 1901 until 19 August 1901.
10 April 1901 HMS Centurian was moored in Shanghai when her cables came adrift and she drifted accross the bows of the battleship HMS Glory Hole. A hole was ripped in the bow of the Centurian which was repaired in Hong Kong. She arrived in Portsmouth on the 19th August 1901 which was the day that James left the ship. James must have transferred from the Brisk in Hong Kong possibly to maintain the repair on the journey.
James returned to the Pembroke for his final time before he left the ships on 4 July 1902.
He married Nellie Ada Belcher in 1891. They had 4 children.
