• Obituary, 2007, Maine, USA. Marie Worsley Lyden, 83, passed peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Sept. 15, 2007, with her son, Jerry and granddaughter, Heather, by her side. Marie was born July 16, 1924, in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England, the daughter of Ernest and Mabel Barber. Marie was a World War II British Army veteran. Her service during the war, included being assigned as a radar operator. Marie was a decorated veteran receiving two medals for her service. Marie met her husband, Ed at a military dance and they were married Oct. 14, 1945. She arrived in this country as a war bride and worked in a variety of positions, including as the first female uniformed police officer in Orangeburg, N.Y., in the early 1950s. After Ed's graduation from Columbia University, the family moved to Princeton, N.J., in 1956, where while raising three boys, she worked at Princeton Medical Center and the Lawrence Animal Hospital. In 1970, Marie, Ed and their youngest son, Tim, moved to Van Buren, shortly thereafter, moving to the Bangor area, where she resided until her passing. For a time, she was employed by the Bangor Daily News as a stringer. She is well remembered in the community for her work at various medical offices as well as several departments within St. Joseph's Hospital. Marie was instrumental in the foundation of New Hope Hospice. Marie was a member of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, Brewer, for more than 20 years. She retired from the work force when she was 79. She was a fiercely devoted mother, grandma and great-grandma. She loved spending time sitting in the gardens, in her English hometown, sipping as would say a "properly made cup of tea." Marie was very fond of animals and had many of them through the years. In the 1950s and 60s, she bred great danes and boxers and even showed them at Westminster. Marie was also very fond of her flowers and had many beautiful African violets throughout the years. Marie was an avid reader, enthralling herself in any Dick Francis book she could lay her hands on. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward F.X. Lyden; by her parents, Ernest and Mabel Barber; her sisters, Rose Marie and Joyce Barber; her brother, Ewart Barber; her son, Daniel Lyden; her granddaughter, Jennifer Lyden; and her beloved cat, Sufi. She is survived by her sons, Jerry Lyden and his wife, Nancy Nicholson, of Ewing, N.J., Timothy W. Lyden and wife, Donella, of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Daniel Lyden Jr. of Washington state, Anne Marie of New Jersey, Thomas Lyden of Bensalem, Pa., Michelle and her husband, John Fones, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Eric Lyden of New York City, Heather and her husband, Benjamin Kelly, of Tampa, Fla.; her niece, Helen and husband, John Rich, of Chesterfield, England; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Marie is also survived by her beloved cat, Zoe, who will be retiring to a life of luxury and spoilage in Tampa, Fla. Marie's son, Jerry and granddaughter, Heather, were her pride and joy. She will be lovingly remembered for her dedication and devotion to her family and friends, her quiet inner strength and her quick wit and fierce independence.

Marie married Edward F. K. LYDEN in 1944 in Christchurch, Hampshire.
